Biography
A bit about me.
Born and raised in East Yorkshire, I am a Yorkshire man and a truly proud one at that! I have spent many years walking this beautiful county and hope to share many of its hidden gems with you all.My interest in photography started many years ago, taking a lunchtime class at school that helped me learn some of the basics. Then real life called, and I started work and a career in cycling. After 10 years, an injury put paid to furthering this passion, so I turned back to my camera and enrolled on a City and Guilds course. Over 8 years of studying, I gained six distinctions and went on many courses with the then masters of landscape and darkroom. Using this knowledge, I set about putting together works that I processed and printed myself. Over the years, my passion grew stronger and I felt ready to put together a body of work for an exhibition. Entitled, Yorkshire, A Land Painted Silver, I have held this exhibition to critical acclaim at several venues now, with many more to come.
The difference with my work over many others is that I still believe that film and traditional techniques yield the best results, particularly in black and white. There is a deeper feel to a well printed silver halide print, that digital can only mimic. Yes it is not as convenient as digital, no where as easy and quick as digital and requires a great deal of skill, time and patience to produce work, yet for me is so much more satisfying that each print is a real hand made original work of art, that has seen many hours of trial and error to produce. Fuji film and Ilford have been great supporters of film, and in this technology based world, still produce great materials to keep this art form alive. It was with great pride that I was asked to help promote the choose-film web site with Fuji with the use of my work on their literature. With their help I hope to use this great medium for years to come.
My influence in photography comes from many areas, but it is music that creates the mood and ‘feel’ to my work. Getting up in the early hours and finding the light bathing a glorious landscape is further enhanced by great pieces of music that create a depth of experience that is my driving force, my passion and my life. This has helped me develop my unique and personal ‘style’, that along with sharing a view or landscape, shares an insight to a deeper meaning and feel. This for me is where black and white can share pure emotion, mood and feel that colour cannot.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you. Should you want more, I am able to give personal tuition to help share my passion, and should anyone want it, an insight into real film photography. Interested? Contact me through the Contact Us page.
Thank You.
