Traditional Photography
by
Daren Smith

Hello and welcome to my site.

I am an East Yorkshire based photographer, specialising in traditional silver halide photography. I shoot on film, and develop and print my own work in my own darkroom. Although I do also shoot digitally, I feel that traditional Black and White prints have a “richness” as well as a tactile quality that digital printing cannot yet equal.

My exhibition, Yorkshire, A Land Painted Silver, has been held to critical acclaim at various venues such The Treasurers House, York and Fountains Abbey (National Trust) and The Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes. I have future exhibitions planned which will be announced in the news section.

I use a variety of cameras, from 35mm Nikons to medium format cameras from Bronica and Hasselblad. I also use a “Holga” toy camera for the images in the “Almost Perfect” Gallery.

I am available for commissions and of course all of my work is for sale in various sizes.

Oh, just in case you wondered about the title of my site, the word photography is derived from the Greek word, and means “To Paint with Light”. I use traditional silver halide based materials, developed chemically, hence the “painted silver”.
